Salem High School Alumni Association - Grants
SHSAA Classroom Grants are designed to support our mission of fostering student development in the amount of $100-$500 to eligible K-12 teachers in the Salem City School District. Classroom Grants are designed to expand, improve, or provide unique educational insights while enhancing educational opportunities, environment, and the physical and mental growth of students.

SHSAA Career Educational Grants are designed to foster the career education of groups of eligible K-12 students and alumni in the amount of $100-$1,000 for educational events or educational materials. These events or materials should be designed to expand, improve, or provide unique insights into careers and make a lasting impact.

Named Grants are a way for generous donors to sponsor perpetual grants to provide annual funds to accomplish specific educational goals. A $10,000 donation or more will provide 5% annually to fund Classroom Grants or Career Educational Grants.

  • Dr. Peter Apicella Annual High School Biology Grant, funds to be used by the SHS Biology Classes to encourage healthcare careers including doctors, nurses, and other wellness-related fields of study, established 2024.
  • Kelly Janofa K-8 Gifted and Talented Education Grant - gifted by Drs. Liz and Austin Fredrickson. Funds to be used to empower teachers with the necessary resources to create challenging, engaging opportunities for Gifted and Talented Education learners, established 2025.

CLASS K:
   Creating a structural yet playful engaging learning environment with counting charts, magnetic tiles, and toy sets that nurture curiosity, organization, and early academic growth in kindergarten (Barrett, Chelsea)

   All subjects - Hands-on math and literacy games, fine motor tools, cooperative play activities, and meaningful story items. (Dankovich, Dominique)

   ELA/Math/STEM - Materials that incorporate multiple learning modalities (visual, auditory, tactile, kinesthetic), promote critical thinking, problem solving & creativity. (Miller, Lisa)

   Kindergarten - Reinforce and develop fine motor skills, enhance STEM activities in student-led centers, and provide materials for the classroom library (Nichols, Nikki)

   Support fine motor skill development, helping students strengthen the muscles in their hands and fingers, supporting writing, using utensils, and self-help skills such as buttoning and zipping. (Solis, Kary)

   Increasing engagement and privacy for students who need to move especially in their first year of kindergarten; items will help increase fine motor skills, and privacy folders will help with less distraction during assessments. (Westbrook, Melinda)

   Technology - Subscription to Starfall, serving any child at Buckeye School, to supplement language and literacy programs (Wonner, Paula)

CLASSES K - 2:
   Special Education - Extension activities and motivators of items are needed for students on the Autism Spectrum. Extension activities go beyond the regular lesson and are used to build understanding and confidence. (Gottschling, Tracy)

   Speech Language Pathology - Building communication through visual and hands-on learning materials (Paolucci, Tori)

CLASSES K - 6:
   STEM, Social Studies, Innovation - STEM-related supplies to use with student enrichment groups - Provided by Kelly Janofa K-8 Gifted and Talented Education Grant (Kemats, Jamie)

CLASS 1:
   Essential classroom items to enhance the learning environment and better support the students academically and socially. These materials will significantly strengthen the effectiveness of instruction and provide students with the necessary tools to succeed. (Duckworth, Claire)

   All core subjects - For the Inclusive Sensory Classroom Project that creates a learning environment that meets the diverse needs of all students. (Golubic, Lindsey)

   All Subjects - Light covers to reduce eye strain, floor cushions to use while reading, and laminating sheets to prepare classroom materials (Hochadel, Juli)

   All Subjects - Flexible seating for students, floor cushions, and BouncyBand Sit and Twist Seat Cushion. Headphones for I-ready reading and math (Newburn, Kari)

CLASS 2:
   Everyday classroom essentials, sensory tools, and holiday project supplies to create meaningful learning experiences. (Slopek, Susan)

   Creating a designated reading area and various stations for individual and group work with tools for hands-on learning activities, positive reinforcement, and instruction. (Winner, Allie)

CLASS 4:
   Language Arts/Writing - privacy folders for students during tests and independent work, expanding of book club, and expansion of Project Passion to help students discover new passions, build confidence, and see themselves as creators with limitless potential. (Willoughby, Delaney)

CLASSES 5 - 6:
   ELA Intervention - expanding classroom library to be more inclusive for striving readers. Expanding the reading growth opportunities that are provided. (Weeda, Renee)

   STEAM, Music, Band - Dash Robots, Sketch Kit, Marker Refill Kit (Zeno, Anne)

CLASS 7:
   Social Studies - Improve students geography skills, increase student morale and motivation, help students focus, and provide supplies for the classroom and students in need. (Kekel, Ashley)

CLASSES 7 - 8:
   Special Education - Classroom reward items, puzzles, organization and various games to benefit 50 Junior High special education students. (Chestnut, Logan)

   Special Education / English - Journals and sandtray starter kit for academic and social-emotional use (Skiba, Brooke)

   Science - Calculators, STEM building kits, Index cards, dry-erase boards, markers, and erasers (Stone, Erika)

CLASSES 7 - 12:
   Health & Physical Education - Respiratory system model and smoker lung model, yoga mats, and fitness workout cards. (Harding, Suzanne)

CLASSES 9 - 12:
   Special Education/Pathways - Educational decorations, organizational materials, and displays that align with curriculum goals. (Fast, Halley)

   Science and Robotics - additional equipment for both the class and robotic teams (Lukes, John)

   Mathematics - Bluetooth drawing tablet to be able to write on the whiteboard from anywhere in the room, allowing for checking in on students individually and not having to be stuck at the front of the room the entire time. (Putzier, Stephanie)
