The Salem High School Alumni Association endeavors to be an active and responsive group. In recent years the association has added to the number, size, and type of scholarships it awards.

Available for graduating seniors are various scholarships that recognize excellence in classwork, athletics, extracurricular activities, community service, and leadership. In addition to the Alumni Association Academic Scholarship, other scholarships include the Floyd and Cora May Reich Stone Vocational Scholarship, Max Fisher Athletic Scholarship, J. Robert Sebo Achievement Scholarship, J. Robert Sebo Bowling Green Scholarship, Greenisen Leadership Scholarship, Salem High School Class of 1966 Scholarship, Hickey Metal Fabrication Vocational Scholarship, Howard "Doc" Pardee Music Scholarship, and Emma Bauman Holmes Vocational Scholarship.

Salem students who have graduated and are furthering their education may find support from numerous scholarships such as the J. Robert Sebo College Scholarship, Charles Fox Scholarship, Howard “Doc” Pardee College Music Scholarship, Emma Bauman Holmes Vocational Scholarship, and Greenisen College Leadership Scholarship.

Many of the scholarship funds provide for multiple recipients, both at the high school and college levels. (See link for last year’s recipients.) Scholarship amounts have increased dramatically since the early 20th century and currently range from $1,000 to $6,800. All scholarships are funded from the proceeds of the association’s investment portfolio. The principal of the portfolio is now in excess of $7 million. The association’s management guidelines allow annual spending of up to five percent of the 12-quarter rolling average of the market value of the investment portfolio. The proceeds from the investments also cover office expenses and other costs such as those associated with mailing newsletters two times a year to 10,000 Salem High School alumni. The association’s management guidelines stipulate that the annual income allocation cannot reduce the principal of the association’s investment portfolio.

More than 400 alumni and friends typically attend the annual reunion banquet on the night before graduation. In addition to bestowing scholarships, the banquet provides an opportunity to honor a distinguished alumnus, recognize the 50th reunion class, and hear from representatives of other reunion-year classes. The association’s board members are elected during the annual business meeting that is also part of the gathering.
